I have shoulder length hair so Im sort of in that stage where I can put my hair up but I cant do toooo much with it. I keep seeing all these cut messy updos though and everyone says they are easy and quick but I dont know how the heck you do it?!

Goody Twist pins. Get the smaller kind, and you can make your bun semi messy but it will still stay on!

I find texture is key for a messy updo. I usually let my hair go curly when I know I'm going to put it up, and I find it works much better if I haven't washed it in a day or two. If neither is an option, try using a generous amount of dry shampoo in your hair (like Pssst) or a texturizing spray (like big sexy 'play dirty').
From that point, just secure it in a few uneven sections. The goody twist pins are great, except if you have fine hair. Then use regular bobby pins.

Yup what Kelly said. Gotta get it a little "dirty" with product. Will be much easier to work with.
