Im going to help my mother with her make up next week and I was thinking what do I need to think of when Im doing a mature (30-40-50) year old woman?

With older women I will only use matte shadows and makeup unless they request something with a sheen specifically. Shine and sparkles on older skin just extenuates the wrinkles and isn't as flattering.

It's going to vary on what kind of skin you're working with. Like with anyone you do makeup on. Like for example, two older people I work on the most is my mother and my boyfriends mother. On my mother I tend to use mineral makeup and matte shadows because sadly her skin has gone a bit crapey and wrinkley and it just looks better. On my boyfriends mom I have to try and cover the really bad permanent eyeliner she had done years ago, and draw in eyebrows since she's over waxed them all these years, and try and match her overly tanned leather skin (that woman loves to tan). So I have to use completely different methods with both of them.

Do not apply blush to the apple of her cheeks....apply along on her cheek bones. This lifts her face. Because when she doesn't smile, with blush on the apple of the cheeks, it looks dragged down and at that age its all about lifting up the face.

HYDRATE! My secret weapon for working on more mature skin (on the dry/crepey side) I use MUFE's HD Elixer. It's the best pick-me-up in a bottle! Also great for tired skin from lack of sleep. LOVE!

Prep the canvas well before application, and you can take years off someone's face!
