Should I cut my hair?

My hair length is about to the bottom of my shoulder blades and I'm beginning to see a lot of damage on the ends of my hair. Plus it's super thick, so it's getting near impossible to make a bun out of it. When I try to use a donut bun holder, close to 3 inches peaks out of the top and I end up having to braid it around. This is the style I was thinking, except I wouldn't cut it that short, I'd probably leave another inch or so on.
Is this a good or bad idea?

You can always get your hair professionally thinned out and just cut the dead ends, add layers. Not to much or else your hair would become too big.
