I wanted to do an experiment and see if you beauties can tell the difference between good and bad contouring - meaning is the contour obvious? Then that's bad contouring because it's supposed to be undetectable - it should look like you just naturally have great bone structure - when what you really did was contour to create it - so here is a photo from jordan liberty's YouTube video "why you should NOT contour with bronzer" so I this photo he shows pretty drastically how bad vs good contouring looks like - can you tell the difference?

I can tell the difference but to be honest I don't really like either of them.

I definitely see the difference but I'm just personally not a fan of the look regardless. For pictures, yes, it looks amazing for pictures...everyday wear? No. I can always see just deep streaks on the side of the face, even with the correct product, when looking at the side profile (even from the front when bronzer is used). I just don't think it's really necessary.

Yes, but seriously do not listen to these people above me talking about how contouring sucks and it's unnecessary for everyday wear and don't think people should do it. Don't get me wrong, you're allowed to have your opinion on it but I think that if you want to contour everyday (I do) you should.

When obviously if you want to you should lol, I'm not judging anyone that choose to, it can look good, but still don't think it looks as great in person. I never said I don't think people should do it, I cannot careless what others do with their face. That's just how I feel. No one has to listen.

I see the difference but like Renay, I'm personally not a fan of contouring unless it's for pictures, etc. I just don't find it necessary for me :)

Whenever I do makeup I always like to contour. But it's never a heavy strong thing. It's a quick dab in my NARS Olympia pallet and a jiggle on my cheek and I like to think the end result just helps add some slight dimension to the face. I hate hate hate hate bad streaky zebra contour. If that's your thang the. Good for you but I think it looks awful...

I really want to get the Kevyn Aucoin sculpting powder, I haven't seen the brushes though. I'm sure they're also to die for!

I wish I could contour and highlight for occasions I feel like I want to cause I probably wouldn't do it everyday. You can definitely tell a difference in bad vs good contour. Good you're not supposed to tell and that just comes with practice and blending well, opposed to the harsh lines or not the right products.

Renay, sorry I misinterpreted what you were saying.

Glad everyone is able to contribute and yeah I personally don't really contour or even wear a bunch of makeup on a daily basis but I just hate seeing posts of beauties constantly asking about contouring and getting bad advice so glad this topic can help clear up a few misconceptions about it - and of course thank you miss Jacqueline for your great pro tips ;)

No you are fine! I just thought I'd clarify, I guess I can see how you came up with that conclusion

I love it when its done properly. Yet at the same time its not a step everyone needs to do. I have a natural contour and while from time to time I'll go in and bring it out just a bit more with a contour powder I'm a big fan of highlighting and skipping out on the contour powder.

I am such a novice, I liked both pics! Although I like the pic on the left better.

I agree with you Shelley - most people already have beautiful bone structure and natural contours that don't need much emphasis - and I agree I usually find myself highlighting certain areas and skipping the contour too.
