Not sure where to start with lightening my hair!
A little history,
I have naturally dirty blonde hair, and in 8th grade I died it brown and liked the way it looked but it faded so so quick, so I eventually died it black. I actually liked it so much I've kept up with the black for about 5 years now. However, my blonde roots come in so quickly and it is getting to be so routine and boring for me I just want something new! For now I am just trying to achieve a solid medium/dark brown color, but I do not know where to start. I know it can be extremely damaging to my hair so if anyone could help me avoid that it would be greatly appreciated!
Xoxo

You have to let what's on there fade as much as possible or its going to look horrible no matter what. And then you have to lighten it gradually with a lot of TLC. Best to have it done in a salon.

If I were you I would start using a lightening shampoo, conditioner, and spray, I like john Frieda blonde go blonder. It should help fade the black and get you started with the lightening process. Once you get to a significantly lighter shade you could then try to lighten it with color, but nothing too harsh. Do it slowly, your hair will thank you.

I haven't dyed it as a whole for over a year now, I only do routine root touch ups. So what it is now is as faded as I think it going to get :( lol

I used that shampoo to go from medium brown to medium blonde without using anything else. I loved it.

Hope it helps you get it to the point where you don't have to go through the orangey feted out phase. I did that myself not too long ago, however, if you do decide to lighten harshly and you do end up with orange, blonde go blonder will tale care of that too. But it lightens gradually, so hopefully in a couple of weeks (sooner if you use the spray+heat styling) it should take you into brown.

Okay I'm not trying to rush anything because I do not want to go through an orange phase! Though it most likely will happen at some point of the process. Lol. I will be sure to purchase the go blonder shampoo :)

Go to a salon if you are wanting a medium dark brown they shouldn't have much trouble getting it. just don't expect to be light Brown. you won't have to go through the orange phase if you are just going to medium/dark brown. you can always go lighter over time... afterwards make sure you get a moisturizing shampoo and ask the salon about their oils (put them in after you shower, small drop). its a 10 has a really good oil.
I am about to graduate cosmetology school. I have had black hair and came back from it and I have done my friend's black hair to a dark red.

When they lighten your hair yes it will go orange but they will put a color on right after that. but be ready it us corrective color so it is not cheap.

Great advice! Thank you so much. I will need to save up for all of these salon visits but I know it will be worth it :)

From what I heard, vitamin c powder (emergen- c) mixed with shampoo. put it in your hair for 20ish minutes and rinse out. it comes out and turns to a light brown but I'm not 100% sure. look at videos on youtube that will explain it to you better.

Shampoos with sulfate can strip the color really fast. Keep washing it and it will turn an ashy brown. I've dyed my hair blue black many times and whenever I wanna go lighter I use a sulfate shampoo like head and shoulders. That ash brown color you will get can be your base color and then you can easily get highlights and work your way up.
